On June 17th and 18th, EuRoC was one of the seven European ICT-FoF projects organising the 1st I4MS event in Berlin which focused on how ICT is a key innovation driver for manufacturing SMEs.
A session on "Innovative robotics experiments in manufacturing" was moderated by EuRoC Coodinator Bruno Siciliano (University of Naples Federico II), who presented the Robotics Challenge Initiative for European Manufacturing. The three challenge scenarios along with the supporting platforms were presented by Martin Haegele (Fraunhofer IPA), Rainer Bischoff (KUKA Labs) and Christoph Huerzeler (Alstom Power), respectively.
The event, which was successfully attended by 175 people, was held in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme "Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". A joint panel opened the event with the contributions of: Andreas Goerdeler, Deputy Director General for Information Society, Media at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy; Khalil Rouhana, Director for Components & Systems at the European Commission; Maurizio Gattiglio, Chairman of the European Factories of the Future Research Association; Rainer Bischoff, Vice President of euRobotics AISBL and Head of Technology Development at KUKA Laboratories GmbH.
The ICT Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs (I4MS) initiative, which was launched in 2003 by the European Commission with a budget of 77 million Euros, has successfully completed its first year. This innovation initiative aims to help the manufacturing sector, and high-tech SMEs in particular, to profit from the latest advances in ICT, advanced robotic solutions, innovative laser applications, intelligent sensor-based equipment and HPC cloud-based simulation services.
