Founded in 1978, Machining Centers Manufacturing SpA - MCM s.p.a. - was a precursor in the development of the automated factory: from the horizontal machining centers of the Clock, Tank, Action, Forerunner and Jet Five series, up to Concept, providing extremely high levels of performance in terms of speed, precision, flexibility, time- and cost-reduction.
MCM's production is based on a complete range of high-quality horizontal machining centers: FMC - flexible manufacturing cells, and FMS - flexible manufacturing systems. MCM's strengths lie in its mission to support the client with a global solution proposal whereby MCM, in addition to producing the machine, develops the automation and all the sub-groups as well as manufacturing the components, tools, machining programs and management software for the whole manufacturing cycle of the pieces being produced. For this reason some of the major societies in the aerospace, automotive and energy sectors, as well as small and medium mechanical engineering companies - in Italy and all around the world - have chosen MCM. At present, it has a staff of 220 people and the turnover of the year 2007 was of about 60 million Euro with an export quota of 30%. In 1987 MCM incorporated its subsidiary company MCM FRANCE sarl for the sale and after-sale service in France, Belgium and Spain. The areas of Northern Europe (Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland) are supported by the subsidiary company MCM DEUTSCHLAND founded in 1996. In 1997 MCM USA Inc. was incorporated in Chicago and it gives the sales and after-sales support for North America. MCM designs, produces, installs and services all its machining centers and production systems. The heart of MCM is the Designing, Research and Development Dept.: It is the place where ideas are transformed into innovative solutions. The 12 engineers of Software and Engineering dept. develop the software for supervisory control and production management; their latest product is the jFMX – java powered Flexible Manufacturing Executive: It is the basis for the integration of the production systems into the enterprise Web.
Its role in Team PIROS will be mainly related to:
- the definition of the requirements and specifications
- leading the development of the field-test
- Validation of robustness, and affordability (business plan, ROI)
MCM designs, produces, installs and provides all machines and manufacturing systems. MCM's heart is the design, research and development department. As detailed at http://www.mcmspa.it/english/research-and-development/, the R&D of MCM works in a close relationship with Academia. Furthermore, it has been involved in more than ten-funded project (both European and Italian National funding frameworks).
