Fondazione Istituto Italiano
di Tecnologia

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology, IIT) is a Foundation established jointly by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Ministry of Economy and Finance to promote excellence in basic and applied research and technology transfer. The research plan of the institute focuses on Robotics & Humanoid Technologies, Neuroscience and Cognition, Nanotechnology and Materials.

The total staff counts more than 1200 people (about 100 working exclusively in the area of robotics in the Department of Advanced Robotics, ADVR). Research activities in ADVR focus on an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to robotic development, cognition and control, as well as on the development of novel robotic technologies. There are five core research areas at the Department of Advanced Robotics: Industrial Automation, Humanoid Technologies, Biomimetic Technologies, Biomedical Technologies and Haptic/VR technologies.

IIT has been involved in more than 100 EU funded projects in the last seven years. ADVR in details has a vast experience in robotics, especially related with manipulation and mobility. This has been implemented in EU-funded projects, e.g. Autorecon (FP7, 285189), Saphari (FP7, 287513), Amarsi (FP7, 248311), ACTIVE (FP7, 270460), RobotMate (FP7, 608979), WearHap (FP7, 601165), WALKMAN (FP7, 611832), STIFF-FLOP (FP7, 287728), Pandora (FP7, 225387), Centauro (H2020, 644839) and CogIMon (H2020, 644727).

As a research partner of the AutoMAP Team, IIT will be coordinated by Prof. Darwin Caldwell and Dr. Fei Chen to carry out various tasks, including hardware and software design, system integration and experiment implementation.
