Team Profile:

This team is made up of researchers from Centre for Automation and Robotics UPM-CSIC. Team is led by Prof. Manuel Ferre, who is Professor Titular at UPM and currently Vicedirector of CAR. Francisco Suárez and Luis Rubio are PhD candidates at the UPM PhD program in ‘Automation and Robotics’, Doris Bautista is a master student in robotics, and a new master student is expected to join to our group soon. Manuel Armada and Rafael Aracil are Director and past-Director of CAR respectively, they will mainly contribute after the qualification in order to develop the proposal for the second phase.

This team has a strong support from more researchers from CAR, in particular assistance from engineers with experience in computers and robot maintenance.

Manuel Ferre has a strong experience in developing R&D projects related to robotics, telerobotics, human interfaces and haptics, which are funded by Spanish and European programs. Regarding similar competitions, he participated in the 2012 DARPA Robotics Challenge. A paper titled “Competing in the DARPA Virtual Robotics Challenge as the SARBOT Team” was introduced at the ‘ROBOT-2013 Conference’ and published by Springer, which describes the results of the SARBOT team. Manuel was responsible of remote manipulation tasks in this DARPA challenge. Manuel is an active research in the telerobotics and haptics communities, he is currently chair of the euRobotics Topic Group on ‘Telerobotics and Teleoperation’.

Francisco Suarez and Luis Rubio are young researchers with a strong experience on robot control and programming, in particular developing application under ROS. Francisco also participated in the 2012 DRC by developing remote manipulation algorithms and his thesis is focused on these topics. Luis is also a young researcher with high skills in computer programming. Master students will focus their contribution on developing manipulation and perception algorithms, they have experience in ROS since all master students have enrolled in curse on robot programming under ROS. Manuel Armada and Rafael Aracil are very well reputed senior researchers in robotics that will offer a strong support as consultants in particular after the qualification step.

CAR is the largest Spanish centre of research in robotics. It is a joint centre from The Spanish National Research Council (‘Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas – CSIC) and ‘Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’ (UPM). They have been the first and third Spanish institutions respectively, in developing Europe projects during the FP7. Therefore CAR members have a strong experience in European collaborations and have participated in many international events.
