The participants in this team consist of F. Kaanen, Director of Bosch Scharnieren; a hinge manufacturer and B. Groet, Director of Factory Control; a robotic system integrator.
We like to develop and test a production system for a typical SME problem. As most of the large scale production has left The Netherlands to Asia, only small number production stays here. Most of the time because of difficulties with offshoring due to small batches and quick delivery times.
Automating production for large scale production is relatively easy, as specialize solutions with easy payback periods build an easy business case. For small batches a feasible business case is much more complex and difficult to reach acceptable payback period for the investment.
We like to prove it is feasible, using a shop floor production site for making hinges. Basically not a difficult production process, but difficult to automate using classical solutions.
Batch sizes consist of 10 to 100 pieces, requiring reconfiguration every 15 to 30 minutes. Part of reconfiguration is adjusting presses. This is a manual job. After this production can start, in our solution with robots. This concept request, single‐minute‐reconfigurable robots as well as robots and humans working side by side.
