Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) is a leading university in natural sciences and engineering. It hosts around 8000 researchers, including 3700 PhD students, and 13000 MSc and BSc students.
ETHZ has a long tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship, creates around 20 spin‐off companies each year and educates 30% of the top management in Switzerland. The two involved research groups, the Autonomous Systems Lab (ETH‐ASL, Prof. Roland Siegwart ) and the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control (ETH‐IDSC, Prof. Raffaello D’Andrea, ) are internationally renowned research units in the field of autonomous robot design, control and navigation.
Their fields of competence span the design and control of small flying robots, running quadruped robots, and juggling robots. Recent achievements in the field of quadrotor systems are the control of extreme maneuvers (e.g. multi‐flip), ping‐pong playing, and pole balancing as well as fully autonomous vision‐based navigation of a small group of helicopters. The two ETHZ groups are involved in national and European projects with academia and industry. They also created multiple spin‐off companies in the recent years.
