Company profile:

Shadow is a research focussed UK-based SME taking robotics technologies and transferring them to real-world problems. The Shadow team of 20 is 1/3 hardware development, 1/3 software development and 1/3 production engineering.

Shadow is the leading developer of dexterous robotics manipulation technologies - or "hands for robots" - and brings expertise across the project development process, from working with partners to shape the proposal to embedded systems design, mechanical engineering, systems integration, hardware development, and application discovery. Shadow is now taking dexterous manipulation out of the lab and into real-world applications.

Technology description:

The Shadow Hand is a fully human-like hand (4 fingers, 1 thumb, 1 wrist, 24 movements, 20 degrees of freedom) for application on robot systems. It gives robots the full dexterity of the human hand, and Shadow's supporting ROS software packages allow the Hand to do intuitive grasping and holding of objects where 3d models are present. The Hand is completely integrated into ROS, making it easy to use and deploy across robot platforms. The Dexterous Hand can be used across a range of manipulation and grasping challenges, ranging from flexible assembly through to logistics handling. The new “Hand Lite” is a smaller, lighter more compact Hand design with three fingers and thumb but no wrist, designed to be compatible with a wider range of robot arms.
